What an amazing year it has been so far! I have truly loved working with some many amazing small businesses and solo-preneurs this year. There is a lot of blogging to be done over the next few weeks now that the main wedding season is coming to an end (my wedding photography business has had the busiest summer since starting it).

A particular highlight were my spring mini sessions back in May. Mini sessions are an excellent way of giving  small businesses a taste of what it is like to work with me. The feedback I have received has been incredible – making people feel comfortable in front of the camera when this experience is new and strange to them. Making people like themselves on photographs when usually they don’t. For me it is all about the ‘creative collaboration’- the teamwork, the trust, mentally preparing my client, listening to their stories, their feelings and their needs.

My lovely clients enjoyed the two locations I had selected: the Royal Crescent and Pulteney Street. Both locations offer a variety of views, corner, backgrounds and colours. I found it really interesting that not every person suited every corner I had selected for the shoots. Thankfully I am very good at being spontaneous and adapting to the light changing as the mini session days progressed. It was such a pleasure to meet the amazing women and business owners!

“Thank you Betty. It was a great experience, I haven’t had my photo taken professionally since I was probably at school! I really looked forward to seeing them and enjoyed the results.
I’m far from photogenic but you have managed to get some great shots of me looking like myself only better!” Kerry (May 2021)

Wow! Yesterday my local magazine Bath Life published an article about The Creative Collaboration and some of my recent Brand & Business Photography shoots here in Bath, and I couldn’t be more chuffed with it!

Not Only did I get to show of four amazing female powerhouse businesses, but I got to talk about how I first got into photography, what inspired me to start The Creative Collaboration earlier this year and why I love working with creative businesses so much. And the icing on the top of the cake was that Bath Life chose one of my portraits of Athena from Meticulous Ink for the cover image!

You click on the images below to enlarge them or read the full article here – please turn to page 52.

The four businesses featured in this article are:

One of my highlights of 2021 was meeting and photographing musician Huey Morgan who you might know from the band Fun Lovin’ Criminals. The photographs were comissioned by Bath Life Magazine who interviewed Huey about being a Bath resident. He brought his charming dog ‘classified’ (I actually know her name but won’t give it away) who made a great addition to the photos.

The main brief for the shoot was to portray Huey in some recognizable Bath spots to accompany the article. I decided to have both an indoor as well as outdoor location and the Royal Crescent Hotel kindly agreed to let us use one of their rooms for portraits. Time was of the essence so I only brought one portable studio light which is incredibly quick to install. I am a great fan of the hotel’s classic interiors and love how the portraits worked out.

Following on from that Huey, ‘Classified’ and myself went for a short walk around the royal crescent, the circus as well as the side streets. At one point we walked down an empty road when a lady with a baby carrier walked towards us. I notice how she looked at Huey, did a double take and smiled. She told Huey how much she loved his show on Radio 6 and how proud she was that he had chosen Bath as his home. This small moment was so profoundly inline with the tone and message of the article published in Bath Life magazine!

And last but not least a little look behind the scenes. ‘Classified’ had managed to find the best spot in the room while I concentrated on taking pictures of Huey.

Brand photo shoot with Athena from Meticulous Ink in Bath

Visiting Athena in her shop on Walcot Street was one of my most recent shoot. Athena’s workshop which is in the back of her shop is just as exciting as a painter’s studio, she has wooden letters, printing equipment and beautiful stationary everywhere. In my opinion Athena’s unique selling point is her vibrant and authentic personality. She is a joy to be around!

During my shoot I tried to put an emphasis on three things: Athena the maker, Athena the shop owner and Athena the big character (almost everyone I told that I was going to photograph her said they knew her from a calligraphy course, from a printing workshop or have been to the shop to satisfy their stationary addiction). Here she is working at one of her two 1960s Original Heidelberg printing presses.

Athena uses this printing press to produce greeting cards, letter sets and various prints with her unique designs. She also design bespoke event or wedding invitations. But these the printing process doesn’t stop here. She recently bought this beautiful wooden letter press with many letters in various sizes and is in the process of designing a range of new prints.

Can you read it? It says ‘lefty loosey, righty tighty’.

“Betty is super friendly, calm and it’s completely obvious that she adores photography, which I think definitely adds to better pictures!”

Meticulous Ink is a fine stationary shop located on Walcot Street that also offers lettering workshops. Athena Cauley-Yu is the vibrant and fun owner who is deeply established in Bath.

You can find Athena in her shop on 134 Walcot Street in Bath BA1 5BG. Go and visit her website, she has an extensive online shop with many great gifts and sets.

Brand shoot in Bath with surface pattern designer Krishnaa Shyam

Brand shoot in Bath with surface pattern designer Krishnaa Shyam

Visiting an artist or maker in their studio is always such an exciting backdrop for a personal branding shoot. Being amongst the tools, materials and lots of items of inspiration can immensely support the collaboration between the creative and the photographer. It helps to create a truthful portrait of the creative person in their safe space.

Before we went into Lockdown 3.0 began, I visited Krishnaa Shyam in her studio space in the Bath Artist Studios here in Bath. For a long time I had wanted to set foot behind the scenes of these studios and I was not disappointed.

Krishnaa’s studio, like all the others that I walked past and peeked into, was full of items that she created or that inspire her creations. She creates designs and patterns that onto cards and books, but it is her fabric designs that she is most well known for.

Krishnaa’s design process is long and very detailed. She finds inspiration in many different places, but nature is by far her favourite. From poppy flowers to a variety of mushrooms, Krishnaa has studied them all and turned them into hight quality cashmere shawls.

Every project starts with a  series of sketches and ink drawings. The best drawings in her large sketch books get scanned and turned into colourful pieces. Just a small handful of them then gets printed onto fabrics every season.

Krishnaa, who is originally from India, supports many Indian communities through her work. Her cashmere scarfs get printed in a small hub in India and her packaging pouches are made from recycled saris.
