Visiting an artist or maker in their studio is always such an exciting backdrop for a personal branding shoot. Being amongst the tools, materials and lots of items of inspiration can immensely support the collaboration between the creative and the photographer. It helps to create a truthful portrait of the creative person in their safe space.
Before we went into Lockdown 3.0 began, I visited Krishnaa Shyam in her studio space in the Bath Artist Studios here in Bath. For a long time I had wanted to set foot behind the scenes of these studios and I was not disappointed.
Krishnaa’s studio, like all the others that I walked past and peeked into, was full of items that she created or that inspire her creations. She creates designs and patterns that onto cards and books, but it is her fabric designs that she is most well known for.
Krishnaa’s design process is long and very detailed. She finds inspiration in many different places, but nature is by far her favourite. From poppy flowers to a variety of mushrooms, Krishnaa has studied them all and turned them into hight quality cashmere shawls.
Every project starts with a series of sketches and ink drawings. The best drawings in her large sketch books get scanned and turned into colourful pieces. Just a small handful of them then gets printed onto fabrics every season.
Krishnaa, who is originally from India, supports many Indian communities through her work. Her cashmere scarfs get printed in a small hub in India and her packaging pouches are made from recycled saris.
